Mujahid Kamal Khan, actor, singer and model, has been on stage performing in a variety of musicals and featured in countless ads and articles since the age of eighteen. Born in Germany and raised in England, Mujahid has been heavily involved in performing arts throughout his early adulthood.
At the age of 18, Mujahid began his career at the prestigious National Youth Theatre and from there, went on to perform at various venues throughout London. He traveled across seas to the US where he enrolled in drama school and returned to finish school the UK where he was given the lead role of Tony in West Side Story. The following year he was instantly engaged by a London talent agency, giving him the chance to further his career as an actor and begin a new one as a model. Some remember him as the “Asian Face” that appeared in Ford commercials played throughout the UK. Others recall the dashing Royal Navy officer that made appearances all over Asian networks.
One of his biggest breakthroughs came when Mujahid flourished the stage in the West End Fringe, playing the lead of Romeo in Romeo and Juliet. Jennifer Jaffery praised his abilities to succeed as a South Asian in the English world in her article entitled “Asian Actor Plays Lead Role in Shakespearian Play” (Asian W&B 2000). From then on, this Asian actor, model and singer would astonish the Asian as well as the British communities as he continued to gain success in the world of performing arts. He would model for several companies including Nike, Virgin Atlantic, the Royal Navy and Sony and was featured in numerous reviews and articles. These included magazines such as Asiana (“The Wedding Singer, 2003) and UK newspapers such as The Times, Independent and The Evening Standard.
Recently, Mujahid has changed tracks and embarked on a brilliant new singing career. Although he performed at countless weddings and shows as a guest artist, he has decided to kickstart his career with his new single “Pariyon Ki Rani”. Mujahid has relocated to Los Angeles, CA to be close to the heart of the movie making and performing arts industry in Hollywood where he will be able to advance his musical talents and singing career to its max.
When asked how he feels the Asian community, or Desi as it is fondly referred to in the US, involvement has changed in the entertainment industry since he first started modeling in the mid 90’s, Mujahid states “ There has been an increasing presence of Desi artists in modern British and American entertainment and performing arts. When I first started out modeling, it was in the hopes that my success would carve a path for Asian actors and models to succeed in this flourishing yet highly competitive industry. I wanted to uncover those hidden talents embedded in the Desi community both here in the US and in my home country, England. Unlike today, where you see a new Desi album or actor in England almost daily, in the 90s, it was rare to see an Asian model or actor. Even so, American Desi culture is still young when compared to the UK. There is a lot of talent and potential in this market and I look forward to bringing a fresh influence to it with my new soundtrack, one that I believe is truly universal—to be enjoyed regardless of one’s culture or background. I hope that my past and future endeavors will reflect positively on all performing artists across the globe.”
